After four years of collaboration, SLOSEA is working...

  • Recognized Leadership: The Joint Ocean Commission Initiative (JOCI) recently named SLOSEA a Profile of Progress in applying ecosystem- based management along the West Coast.
  • Protecting Marine Ecosystems: SLOSEA, in partnership with Moss Landing Marine Laboratories (MLML), has completed its third year of the California Collaborative Fisheries Research Program (CCFRP) working with local commercial and recreational fishermen to monitor fisheries health inside and outside of marine protected areas (MPAs).
  • Engaged Users: SLOSEA brings together resource managers from state and federal agendics, public orricials from local municipalities, stakeholders that live and work in the ecosystem and scientists in one collaborative management entity. Through this cross-jurisdictional SLOSEA Advisory Committee, scientists collaborate with decision-makers to achieve multiple conservation goals spelled out in our Strategic Plan.
  • Educating the Next Generation of Marine Scientists: SLOSEA has supported over 15 graduate student fellows and near 35 undergraduate senior projects, which bring students into the interdisciplinary realm of science and policy.
  • Applied Research Results: Using CCMS research results, SLOSEA has delivered Management Action Memos (MAMs) directed at agency decision-making opporunities to improve water quality including the effects of contaminants of emerging concern and to protect our region's native wildlife and scenic coastline.

Science serving marine ecosystem health

The San Luis Obispo Science and Ecosystem Alliance

is an integrated group of scientists, resource managers and stakeholders studying and supporting marine resources on the California Central Coast.

VISION:

SLOSEA's vision is a healthy, resilient coastal ecosystem that provides for thriving and interacting populations of plant, animal and human communities.

SCOPE:

The SLOSEA study area includes the Morro Bay Estuary and the nearshore coast and watersheds from Cape San Martin to Point Conception. Please click here to find a map of SLOSEA's scope along California's Central Coast.

ORIGIN:

SLOSEA was established to link research at the Cal Poly Center for Coastal Marine Sciences (CCMS) to marine resource management and policy decisions along California's central coast by using a collaborative ecosystem-based approach.
